Bandsaw finished directly from the mill, no further finish required. It's a rougher texture and size can vary +/- 1/8 inch. Marks from the processing and handling could be visible. When you want a more "rustic finish" this should be your choice.
This finish is a planned or surfaced finish, (not sanded) and accurately sizes the timber at the time it goes through the planer. Maximum size we can surface is 24" x 24". Note that after surfacing timber will shrink depending on the climate and the moisture content of the timber over a period of time.
This finish is a finer rough texture done after the timber has been cut by the mill in order to size the timber to the size required, and clean up any marks from the handling process of the mill or dry kiln. Timbers can be resawn either from green timber, but mostly we do it after the timber has been kiln dry.
This finish is achieved for cutting with a large circle saw sawmill cut directly from the mill. Similar to Mill Rough, it is a rougher texture and can very in size +/- 1/4 inch. Marks from handling at the mill will be visable and add to the rustic appearance of the timber.
This finish is done by using a curved hand planner, to simulate the look of being cut to size with a axe or hand aise
Below are the structural values for comparing different species and grade associated of wooden timbers. Douglas fir is highlighted in yellow shows the highest structural of all species listed below
As timbers dry wood cracks (known as checks) and splits occur. While they do alter the appearance of the timber, checks also add unique character without afffecting the wood's structural integrity. Tiimbers that are cut free of heart center (FOHC) will check or split less than Boxed Heart Center (BH) timbers as they dry. Keep in mind, the larger the timber, the larger the log needed to cut FOHC, so in some cases it will not be possible to supply 100% FOHC timbers. To completely elimate the chance of checks or splits, you should not consider building with natural wood.
